Now that he has taken office, President Donald Trump has signed a series of executive orders and launched other actions that could dramatically change environmental policy and the market for electric vehicles.
There are many questions about what may be possible under the Trump administration, and the extent to which his statements about EVs are true.
One of those questions: Is there demand for EVs?
Trump's actions so far on EVs, including an executive order that revises the White House's priorities to promote "true consumer choice," suggest that he does not believe that consumers want EVs.
In fact, there is significant — and growing — demand for these vehicles. Americans purchased a record 1.3 million EVs in 2024. That includes a fourth-quarter 15 percent year-over-year increase in EV purchases, according to Kelley Blue Book. For 2024, EV sales grew by 7.3 percent from 2023 — nearly triple the overall market's growth.
What concerns the industry is a slowing of sales growth. For example, 2023 EV sales grew by 49 percent from 2022, before dropping to the 7.3 percent gain last year.
