Can truckmakers show auto industry path to software-defined vehicles? |
Volvo Group and Daimler Truck, two large truckmakers, have a software-defined vehicle strategy most passenger car companies have avoided — cooperation. Their joint venture will develop a software-defined vehicle platform and the companies predict competitors will join in.
The partnership between Volvo Group and Daimler has no parallel in the passenger-car space. The manufacturers together claim roughly a combined 40 percent share of the commercial truck market in North America and Europe, according to S&P Global Mobility.
"By teaming up with Daimler Truck, we will accelerate the development of this platform and share the burden of heavy investments," Lars Stenqvist, Volvo Group's chief technology officer, said at CES in January.
