Specifications:

The new E-208 offers a 115kW/156bhp all-electric engine, combined with a 51kWh battery, providing a range of 400km (WLTP combined cycle under approval).

The 208 benefits from its mid-career restyling to gain aggressiveness outside and techno content inside

Alongside the 136 hp version, the 100% electric E-208 offers the 156 hp version of the E-308, but with a smaller battery.

The 208 offers the telematics system of the 308, with improved functionalities

Already 4 years old, the Peugeot 208 is going through the restyling process and suffice to say that its manufacturer is under pressure: not only is it the most popular lioness in the range but, last year, elle was also the best-selling car in Europe and intends to remain so! As the little Peugeot has built its success on a highly aggressive look, the stylists have had a field day with this mid-career development. Add to that new engines, without forgetting updated telematics, and the 208 is back in force among the "small" ones that count, such as the Renault Clio, Dacia Sandero or Volkswagen Polo.

To refresh the 208, Peugeot uses the recipes applied to the 2008, also recently restyled: the new Lion logo sits in the middle of an enlarged grille, surrounded on each side by three vertical claws pushed back to the ends of the shield in order to visually widen the car. A desire that we find at the rear where, in the unchanged optical units, the light signature is now horizontal instead of vertical. On the other hand, the Sochaux brand has spent less on renewing the interior.

As the 208 had already adopted the trigger to replace the mini gear lever last year, the main development is the adoption of the telematics system of the 308. We now benefit from the navigation display across the entire width of the 10-inch screen, new features, “natural” voice control that’s smarter than before as well as remote updates. The layout does not change but remains as attractive as ever, particularly in this GT variant with 3D meter. The materials still appear as flattering for the category and the ergonomics of the controls are even slightly improved. Those who like to sit low, on the other hand, always have to lower the steering wheel to see the meters…. but it is inherent to Peugeot's "high cockpit" concept.

A small electric machine that’s still so easy to live with

This is a gain of 48 km, always worth taking, even if we were not able to verify it on the Catalan roads of our test. While waiting to be able to send the little Peugeot to Montlhéry to undergo our rigorous test protocol, we can however confirm that the 400 km of autonomy are entirely credible on a mixed city/road route like ours.

When driving, unless you have a chrono instead of your heart, it is difficult to distinguish this 156 hp variant from the 136 hp, both offering 260 Nm of torque. The 0.8 s saved to go from 0 to 100 km (8.2 s instead of 9 according to Peugeot) and the 1.3 s to go from 80 to 120 km/h (5.3 s compared to 6.6 s) are not "upsetting" and do not transfigure the temperament of the E-208. Smoothness, absence of jerks and silence of operation are the appointments of this small, most frequented sedan thanks to successful ride comfort and soundproofing. Peugeot did not rework the suspensions, but the car did not need it to remain convincing. Fans of old Peugeots with their renowned agility will be just a little disappointed by the very wise temperament of this 208. Especially since the tires clearly favor sobriety over pure efficiency. However, the 208 is not boring to drive, the effective boosts allowing overtaking in complete safety.

Already available to order, and deliverable from December, this 156 hp electric variant does not change, however, in terms of supported charging power: it is 11 kW maximum on alternating current and up to 100 kW on the direct current of fast charging stations on motorways. But before calmly tackling long distances with this E-208 you will have to wait a little while it receives the route planner which was absent on our test model.
