Plenty of other outlets will tell you which electric car they deem the best of any given year. We wanted to take things a step further for our inaugural Breakthrough Awards, which dropped today. Over weeks of vehicle testing and hours of deliberating, our panel of six judges wanted to answer a big question about the EV landscape of 2024: Which new or significantly updated car represents the biggest leap forward for buyers? Which shatters barriers to EV adoption better than all the rest? We narrowed it down to six models: the Kia EV9, Lucid Air Pure, Rivian R1S, Chevrolet Equinox EV, Hyundai Ioniq 5 N and Tesla Cybertruck. Each raises the bar in its own unique way, but we crowned the Equinox EV our winner—largely thanks to its special blend of affordability and range.
