Happy Friday! That means it's time to kick back with a cold one and listen to this week's episode of the Plugged-In Podcast. On this episode, Patrick George and I discuss the pitfalls of EVs with huge batteries. Ford CEO Jim Farley recently said those vehicles have economics that are "unresolvable" for regular consumers. And, as you'll hear, the man has a point. Automakers like Ford can't just rake in fat profits by making bigger SUVs and trucks anymore. That thinking just doesn't work in the electric era, since bulky EVs need huge, expensive batteries. One possible solution? EREVs, or extended-range EVs. Patrick and I see a lot of promise in this new breed of EVs with gas generators. And carmakers like Ford, Ram, Scout and Hyundai do too. Plus, we recap Trump's freeze on EV charger funding and game out what happens next. In other news, Patrick is a big fan of the Rivian R1T's Gear Tunnel, and EV sales skyrocketed at the end of 2024. —Tim Levin, Senior Reporter |
