The engine is also all-new, a 1.6-litre, three-cylinder turbocharged unit. It is the world’s most powerful three-cylinder engine and also the smallest and lightet 1.6 turbo. Producing 261 DIN hp and 360 Nm of torque, it complies with WRC2 technical regulations and can launch the GR Yaris from rest to 100 km/h in just 5.5 seconds, and on to an electronically limited top speed of 230 km/h. Its construction makes use of features derived directly from motor sport, including a ball bearing turbocharger, large-diameter exhaust valves and multi-jet oil piston cooling.

The Toyota Yaris GR may share its name with Toyota's 5-door city-bound hatchback. However, that is where the similarities end. The only shared components between the two are the headlights, tail lights, mirrors and shark-fin roof antenna. The GR features a bespoke, highly-rigid chassis and an all-new lightweight body. This is the first Toyota to feature a carbon composite roof and a substantial amount of lightweight aluminium across the rest of the car, making it far lighter than the steel used in the standard Yaris.

The GR Yaris is a homologation special, much like the original E30 M3, the new Ford GT and the Lancia Stratos. They were originally designed to be entered into the World Rally Championship. Sadly the rally car never came to be, but all the rally-inspired enhancements did make it to the road with this wonderful, purebred driver's car.

A kerb weight of just 1,280 kg gives the GR Yaris an excellent weight-to-power ratio of 4.9 kg per 1 DIN hp.
