We were invited by McLaren to an exclusive customer spec session in Manhattan for a private look at the W1 pre-production design model — and it’s every bit as radical as the rumors suggested. This isn’t the final production car, but a full-scale prototype used to finalize specs and design. No engine. No drivetrain. Just pure intent.
And yes — we’re incredibly honored to be receiving VIN 002, which will be the first McLaren W1 delivered in the U.S. More on that soon.
The W1 is McLaren’s most extreme creation yet. Pushing out 1,258 horsepower to the rear wheels through a cutting-edge hybrid powertrain, it’s built to reach 217 mph, with the aerodynamic philosophy of a Formula 1 car and downforce levels that rival the McLaren Senna. From every angle, it’s designed to slice the air, with active surfaces throughout — including a new active long tail system that extends dynamically to manage airflow and stability.
The gullwing-style doors are a bold new statement for McLaren — dramatic, functional, and unlike anything else in their current lineup. Add to that the extensive use of 3D-printed aero components, a driver-focused interior straight from a spaceship, and a weight figure of just over 3,000lbs… it’s clear this car isn’t just a step forward — it’s a launch into something entirely new.
