I've been let loose in the McLaren Elva! It's a race against the rainstorms in Miami, with the 1-of-149 hypercar from Woking equipped with the rare windshield option. Let's check it out in detail including unseen features like the waterproof rain cover, and paint matched helmet. Let's go!
PURE, UNDILUTED CONNECTION
A car that needs no destination. Or racetrack. Created to deliver nothing but the purest possible driving experience. Uncompromised pleasure. The McLaren Elva… born to heighten every sense and build the closest connection between driver, car and the elements. Impossibly light. Intoxicatingly powerful. Split-second agility.
The Elva pushes our daring design language forward. And proudly embraces the principles set down by Bruce McLaren’s original race conquering open top sports cars of the 1960s – the M1A, M1B and M1C. Just like our latest Ultimate Series, the original road-going ‘Elvas’ were lightweight, open-roofed, mid-engined… and single-mindedly created to deliver a driving experience of exhilarating purity.
In our new Elva, form follows function more closely than ever. Clean, fluid lines and bold shapes flow together and blur the boundaries between inside and out. Cohesive design that makes a perfectly balanced whole.
To make sure you get maximum enjoyment from the elements, the Elva has a pioneering active air management system [AAMS]. It works by guiding high speed air over the open cabin, creating calm around driver and passenger. It means you get the full adrenaline rush, undistracted.
MORE IMFO
We've flown over to Miami to check this particular car out, where the owner has kindly allowed me to take the key and bring you along for a drive. While I've been spoiled to drive the Elva before; firstly from The Space DXB on the road, and also a factory car in anger at the Dubai Autodrome, I must confess those happened in such a blur that the experience hasn't felt very fresh in my memory.
This particular car is finished in Gotham Black with some amazing details and accents, including the number 5 that links to the number of Bruce McLaren's last winning car at Spa-Francorchamps. Tucked away under the rear decklid stores the matching helmets wearing the same livery, and also the temporary roof cover that will very much come into play today.
After a quick look around the car in Miami's Design District, we're then straight out for a run with plenty of cracks from the 4.0l TT V8 through the exhaust system, across the Causeway to South Beach. However, with the weather turning fast, we're darting to an underground garage to tuck away and keep dry.
A huge thanks to the owner of the car and the team who arranged the visit and opportunity to share this drive in the McLaren Elva!
Pared back, honed and highly advanced, the Elva is the lightest road car that McLaren Automotive have ever made. The results are felt in a heartbeat. Agility, telepathic responses and raw performance delivered with unique poise. Nothing connects you so completely to the drive. In every sense.
