Nissan has taken the wraps off the all-new fourth-generation Roox, its popular wagon-type kei car, in Japan. Known as one of Nissan’s consistent top-sellers in the domestic market, the Roox has long been praised for combining practicality with affordability. Now, Nissan is raising the bar again, introducing a model that feels more premium, more advanced, and more spacious than ever before. The new Roox will arrive in Japanese dealerships later this year, with pricing expected to start around 1.6 million yen.

This latest version of the Roox aims to challenge traditional ideas about what a kei car can offer. While still compact in size and optimized for Japan’s urban streets, the Roox now integrates technologies and features typically reserved for larger vehicles. Chief among them is an available 12.3-inch infotainment display, the largest ever in a kei car, supported by NissanConnect with Google built-in. Buyers can expect seamless smartphone integration, navigation through Google Maps, voice control via Google Assistant, and access to apps through Google Play.

On the outside, the Roox follows a design theme Nissan calls “Roomy×Max.” Every detail is shaped to maximize space within kei car regulations. Rounded square motifs appear across the headlights, taillights, wheels, and even interior elements, symbolizing both spaciousness and a playful character. A fresh color palette adds to the individuality of the new model, including shades like Celadon Green, Cinnamon Latte, and Seto Blue. A special two-tone design, inspired by traditional Japanese architecture, further distinguishes the Roox. Altogether, buyers will have 17 different body color variations to choose from.

Step inside, and the sense of roominess is immediately apparent. Interior length has grown by 115 mm compared to the previous generation, now reaching 2,315 mm — the best in its class. This translates to generous knee room for rear passengers and a cargo area capable of swallowing up to four standard suitcases. The interior has been designed under Nissan’s “Breeze concept,” aiming to recreate the light, airy atmosphere of a living room. Materials such as melange fabric on the seats bring a softer, homelike feel, while improved insulation creates a quiet and relaxed cabin environment.

Practicality remains a core strength. Wide rear sliding doors and large grab handles make access easier for children and older passengers. The rear seats can slide up to 320 mm, allowing flexible use of passenger and cargo space. Interior storage has also been expanded, with thoughtful touches like large cup holders, hidden compartments, and drawers for small personal items.

Under the hood, Nissan has refined the engine to deliver better fuel efficiency and smoother performance, while also cutting down on noise and vibration. Extra soundproofing materials have been added around the doors and tires, helping the Roox feel more comfortable and refined, even at highway speeds.

Technology and safety are also major highlights. The Roox becomes the first kei car to feature the Intelligent Around View Monitor with Invisible Hood View, giving drivers a virtual perspective through the engine bay to detect obstacles. Other features include a three-dimensional view for improved spatial awareness and a wide-angle front view to make intersections easier to navigate. Nissan’s ProPILOT system returns, complemented by Intelligent Emergency Braking, Blind Spot Intervention, Blind Spot Warning, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert — advanced driver aids that enhance both safety and peace of mind.

Altogether, the new Nissan Roox represents a significant evolution of the kei car formula. It offers the technology and comfort of a larger vehicle while retaining the maneuverability and efficiency that kei cars are known for. Nissan will showcase the new model at its Global Headquarters Gallery in Yokohama from August 23, ahead of its official sales launch in autumn.
